Homestay is a very popular first choice for international students and working holiday visa holders looking for a live-in experience with an Australian family. It gives you a great opportunity to improve your English skills and adapt to the culture of this new land quickly.
There are pros and cons when you decide to choose homestay as student your accommodation solution in Sydney.
Pros:
- Most hosts will pick you up from the airport, accompany you for going sightseeing, and get you involved in their culture in a short period of time.
- Main meals (breakfast and dinner during weekdays; lunch provided additionally at weekends) are generally included in the price; however the families are free to choose the menu.
- Location with up to 45 minutes of travelling to school (not including time spent waiting for transport)
- Internet access (families can ask for a contribution - usually around A$5 weekly)
- Bed linen included
Cons:
- Living with a family means that you will have to respect the rules established.
- Most students are not aware about the serious water restriction in Australia. Moreover, electricity is also really expensive here as well. So, combining both of them, usually your homestay family will impose a limited time for showers.
- In general, you will not be allowed to take visitors to the house. Also be aware of the fact that the host may speak a second language and there might be pets in the house; as it is quite common in Australia.
- Homestay in Sydney is one of the most expensive student accommodation options. Prices vary from A$ 235 to A$ 300 per week (double room - only available for two people coming together)
